Programs
FAMILY SERVICES,
2707 E. Washington Street, Phoenix
- Provides a variety of services that focus on crisis
situations facing the working poor including: case management, food boxes
and eye exams through VISION USA.
- Assists 4,663 persons per year with utility bills
through Project SHARE.
- 86,298 individuals were helped last year through
rental and utility assistance.
HOMELESS FAMILY
CRISIS SHELTER, 2707 East Van Buren, Phoenix
- Accommodates 386 homeless
families with minor children per year.
- Adults are required to obtain employment (our Job
Developer has a 92 percent success rate in placing clients), and must save 80% of each paycheck while in the shelter.
Adults are required to attend life skills and parenting classes.
- Children are enrolled in local schools and
participate in after-school tutoring programs
through the YMCA and Boys and Girls Clubs. They are given an opportunity
to increase their socialization skills through the local scouting
programs, (our Boy Scout troop is the first in a
homeless shelter in the country), Free Arts of Arizona and The
Mentor Program. Children also receive medical services through Arizona
State University’s Breaking the Cycle
Program.
- Rooms are ADA compliant.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
EMERGENCY RESPITE SHELTER
- Offers short-term residence to survivors of domestic
violence.
- Individual and group counseling sessions empower
survivors to make choices that affect their future.
- Children enroll in local schools, participate in
after-school tutoring sessions and expressive art activities, receive
group and individual counseling and medical services to help assess
further needs.
PROJECT HOPE
(Homeless Outreach to Place and Empower), 2707 East Van Buren, Phoenix
- A joint effort by The Salvation Army, Americorps
VISTA and the City of Phoenix to assist the Valley’s homeless residents in
accessing available services.
- The HOPE van travels an average of 65 miles per day.
Last year, staff and volunteers provided referrals to 300 families and
individuals in need of food, shelter and other basic needs.
- Project HOPE has helped numerous veterans of the
Armed Services complete the necessary paperwork to receive benefits and
become self-sufficient.
PHOENIX CITADEL ACTIVE LEARNING PROGRAM, 628 North 3rd
Avenue, Phoenix
- A parent-child literacy program that includes three
componets: parent education and computer training; reading readiness for
pre-school age children and tutoring for their school aged siblings.
- A summer program for fourth graders in danger of
failing has helped 100 percent of the students successfully prepare
themselves for the fith grade.
- Partners in this program are Americorps
VISTA, Arizona State University and Kenilworth School.
HERBERGER
CHILDCARE CENTER, 2707 East Van Buren, Phoenix
- Accommodates approximately 250 children from the
homeless shelter, domestic violence shelter and surrounding neighborhoods
during the course of a year.
- Utilizes the renowned High Scope curriculum.
SOUTH MOUNTAIN
PRE-SCHOOL, 1351 East Broadway Road, Phoenix
- Administers a curriculum that targets minorities and at-risk children.
- Participates in a Partnership
Tutoring program with Arizona State University and Grand Canyon
University. The program tutors approximately 200 children a day. Each
child receives personal attention from a university student tutor, for six
hours per week during the school year. These activities include academic
assistance, field trips, personal esteem, motivational aspects and
computer lab.
- After one year, the children in the Roosevelt School
District who participated in the program have achieved a 75 percent mastery of basic math and reading skills on
standardized test, up from 30 percent.
SOUTH MOUNTAIN YOUTH
CENTER, 1351 East Broadway Road, Phoenix
- Offers activities to 800
children each day.
- Youth utilize a large community facility (gymnasium,
multipurpose room, weight room, boxing gym, games room, tutorial rooms,
computer room, kitchen and outdoor playing fields). A sport court for roller-skating
and hockey was recently constructed.
- The Center is particularly noted for the quality of
its pregnancy prevention volleyball program
(being among one of the first such inner-city minority programs in
America) and its boxing program (which
produced eleven national champions last year).
MARYVALE CORPS COMMUNITY
CENTER: YOUTH OUTREACH AND GANG PREVENTION, 4318 West Clarendon, Phoenix
- Services target families involved with gang members
or affected by gang members, as well as anti-gang education and
activities.
- Operates street theater, a low rider bicycle club,
and broadcast a radio program called “Barrios Break Thru Oldies” on
Saturday evenings from 8:00 p.m. to midnight.
SILVERCREST/SENIOR CITIZEN CENTERS, 613 North Fourth
Avenue, Phoenix
- Offers 941 low-income senior
citizens a loving and caring place to live. They are served three
meals a day and participate in a variety of social and spiritual
activities. Meals are also delivered to homebound seniors.
- The Army manages two Silvercrest senior subsidized
housing centers, one in Phoenix and one in Mesa.
- Both Silvercrest centers offer free activities such
as exercise classes, health check-ups, arts & crafts and library use.
Residents can also participate in educational programs such as group
shopping trips, financial counseling, emergency welfare assistance and
Bible studies. Residents can also receive legal, medical and
transportation referrals.
- Last year the Laura Danieli Senior Center served 28,687 lunches and delivered 17,830 meals to
homebound persons.
THE SALVATION ARMY ADULT REHABILITATION CENTER (ARC), 24
East Mohave Street, Phoenix
- The Salvation Army’s ARC is the largest residential
drug and alcohol recovery facility in Maricopa County.
- Completion rate for ARC is
four times the national average.
- 362 beneficiaries receive services last year.
